Quilting a project you have spent hours piecing can often be nerve racking and people worry about making mistakes or things not being ‘perfect’. You can make things so much easier for yourself by spending some time getting properly organised before you start which can save you time in the long run!
Step 1 - Prepare Your Quilt
I prefer to baste and quilt on separate days, basting I always find a bit frustrating so that’s not the best time to sit down at the sewing machine. I like to spray-baste and I find it helpful to give the quilt sandwich a quick iron once that’s done to smooth it out. It’s also time to think about what colour and weight of thread you want to use for your quilting, and what design you are planning to do. The books Walk and Walk 2.0 are great for ideas and different ways to mark out your design. Some people like to roll the quilt to fit it in the sewing machine throat but I prefer to scrunch it up as I go.
Step 2 - Prepare Your Space and Tools
Make sure you have a clean and clear space around your sewing machine so you have plenty of room for your quilt to move through the machine. It’s also a good idea to give your machine a quick clean, pop in a fresh needle and make sure you have some bobbins wound and ready to go! (I always seem to end up short and have to wind one more near the end of a project). Good lighting can also make such a difference, especially on a dark winter day.
Step 3 - Prepare Yourself
Are you feeling fresh, hydrated and in a good mood? If not then it’s best to leave quilting for another day! If you feel ready then pick out an audiobook, album or TV show and make sure you are sitting in a good chair. I also like to wear quilting gloves which give you more grip on the quilt sandwich and stop you straining your shoulders.
Now it’s time to start your project! If it starts to go wrong make sure and take a break for a cup of tea or some fresh air.
